How to Read MOT History When Buying a Used Car
MOT history is one of the most useful documents in a used car's life - but most buyers don't know how to read it properly. This guide explains what each part of the record means and how to use it to make a better buying decision.
What MOT history actually contains
Every MOT test carried out in the UK is submitted to the DVSA and stored on the government database. Each test record includes:

- • The mileage recorded at the test
- • Any failure reasons (if the vehicle failed)
- • Any advisory notes (items that were borderline or deteriorating but not yet causing a failure)
- • The testing station location

Pass, fail, and advisory - what each means
Pass
The vehicle met the minimum legal standard at the time of testing. A pass does not mean the car is in excellent condition - it means it was considered roadworthy. Some vehicles pass with a long list of advisories still attached to that test result.
Fail
The vehicle did not meet the legal standard. The record will list the specific failure reasons. Advisory

Category of failure
Some categories carry more weight than others. Brake failures, steering component failures, and emissions failures are more significant than wiper failures or lighting issues. A car that has failed multiple times for brake-related items in different years is telling you something about how it has been maintained - or not maintained.
Test frequency
An MOT is required annually for cars over three years old. If you see large gaps in the test history - years where no test is recorded - that could mean the car was off the road, stored, or driven without a valid MOT. All three scenarios are worth questioning the seller about.
Mileage progression

Location changes
If the testing station location changes significantly from year to year, it may indicate multiple changes of ownership or a car that has moved around the country. This alone is not a concern, but it can provide useful context when combined with other signals.

A clean record is more specific than "it passed every year." The indicators of a genuinely well-maintained vehicle include:
